ABOUT

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Kate Greenberg is an artist and designer of furniture, objects, and lighting. Steered by conceptual inquiry and reflection, she draws on her ever-expanding language of metal, glass, wood, latex, and soft media. Visual motifs from natural phenomenon and mundane architectural forms are re-worked and re-contextualized into functional compositions. The result is an alternative approach to our ideas of comfort, an antidote to a disconnected world.
Environment is a key element from the very beginning of the design process. Deriving ideas from architectural phenomenology — the poetic experience of dwelling — Greenberg picks apart the criteria of furniture design that was written by commodification, societal demands, and the history of domestication, in hopes to create a new future way of living.
Along with Kelley Perumbeti of Office of Tangible Space, Kate Greenberg curates Works In Progress (2024—ongoing), an exhibition series that amplifies, archives, and creates dialogue around the Bay Area craft and design community.
